Question 1

Do you install wood burners in homes without a chimney?

Accepted Answer

Yes. We regularly install wood burners in homes that don't have an existing chimney. In these cases, we use a twin wall flue system that safely vents through an exterior wall or roof. We also build false chimney breasts if you want the visual effect of a traditional fireplace.

Question 2

Are you HETAS registered?

Accepted Answer

Absolutely. We are fully HETAS-registered installers, which means all stove fittings, flue systems, and chimney work comply with national safety standards. You'll also receive a HETAS certificate for your records and insurance.

Question 3

How often should I get my chimney swept?

Accepted Answer

We recommend sweeping your chimney at least once a year, especially before winter if you're using your stove frequently. For heavy use or multi-fuel appliances, twice a year may be best.

Question 4

Do you provide chimney sweep certificates?

Accepted Answer

Yes. After each professional sweep, we issue a chimney sweep certificate, which is often required by home insurers and landlords.

Question 5

How much does it really cost to run a wood burner?

Accepted Answer

This depends on how much you use it. For cosy average evening fires throughout the winter, you'll likely go through about 2 cubic metres of good quality, seasoned hardwood, which currently costs around £160 to £300 depending on where you source it from. Many customers find that heating their main living space with a wood burner can be surprisingly cost-effective compared to gas heating, especially with today's energy prices.

Question 6

Will a wood burner really make my room warmer than my open fire?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Open fires are usually only about 10 to 25 percent efficient, meaning 80 percent or more of the heat produced disappears straight up the chimney. Wood burners are far more efficient, with modern stoves having a minimum net efficiency of 66.6 percent, and some reaching as high as 91 percent, pushing much more heat out into your room.

Question 7

Just how safe are wood burning stoves?

Accepted Answer

Wood-burning stoves are incredibly safe appliances when properly installed and maintained. A professional, compliant installation ensures the stove meets all current building regulations and HETAS standards, and annual maintenance including a chimney sweep keeps everything running safely. A professionally installed wood-burning stove is actually much safer than an open fire.

Question 8

Multi-fuel vs wood only stoves, what's the difference?

Accepted Answer

Wood-only stoves are designed specifically for burning wood logs and use a flat firebrick base, often giving higher efficiency when burning wood. Multi-fuel stoves have a cast iron grate with an ashpan underneath, allowing air to circulate beneath the fuel so they can also safely burn smokeless coal, anthracite and approved peat or turf briquettes, and are generally easier to clean out.

Question 9

Are wood burners going to be banned?

Accepted Answer

No, wood burners are not being banned. Since 2022 all new stoves bought and installed must meet Ecodesign standards, which are significantly more efficient and produce far fewer emissions than older models. House coal has been phased out in favour of cleaner burning smokeless coal, and burning wet or green wood has long been illegal. These changes promote cleaner, more efficient burning rather than restricting wood burner ownership.
